These Are Written: The Canon of the Bible According to the Bible Itself
Abstract
Lutherans hold firmly to the principle of sola scriptura—“the Word alone.” Everything we believe and teach is based on the Word of God. Where do we find that Word of God? In the inspired books of the Bible. Yet, with such an emphasis on the Word of God in our congregations, our church members often struggle with a simple question: “How do we know we have the right books?” Or, phrased a different way, “How do we know we have the right Word of God?” As this author studied this topic, he noted that many writers focus on the external evidence for the canon of Scripture, such as the apostolic authority of its authors and the corporate reception of the canon in the New Testament Church. This essay, however, will approach the topic of canon from a different perspective: What can be learned about the formation of the biblical canon from the Bible itself? God’s Word is self-authenticating, and this study of the Scriptures reveals that the written Word of God provides many convincing proofs of its authority and canonicity. Faith in God’s Word comes through hearing and reading the Word itself. May this essay lead all to a firmer trust in Jesus our Savior and his precious Word.
