More Than A Vote: The Lived Experiences Of The 1995 Amalgamation
Abstract
The 1995 amalgamation of Northwestern College (NWC) and Dr. Martin Luther College (DMLC) into Martin Luther College (MLC) was a major turning point in how the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod trains future pastors and teachers. Most of the writing about this event focuses on the structure of the new college and the joining of the pastor-track and teacher-track programs, but far less attention has been given to what the change felt like for the people who lived through it. This thesis examines the personal impact of the amalgamation through surveys and interviews with students and faculty who experienced the final year of NWC and DMLC, and the first year of MLC. Their memories show strong emotions on all sides, yet they also speak of much growth and positivity. By listening to their voices, we can better understand what they went through.
