| dc.description.abstract | Pastoral ministry in this age presents unique challenges for brotherly admonition. Gossip, whether spread in person or on social media, often serve as a conduit for misinformation, yet they may also provide clues about members who are straying from the faith. This thesis explores whether rumors gleaned from gossip can be responsibly used by pastors in carrying out admonition. After surveying existing literature on gossip, slander, and pastoral care, these resources are evaluated through the lens of Scripture. A detailed exegesis of Matthew 18 provides a biblical framework for admonition, while a word study of Hebrew and Greek terms commonly translated as “gossip” clarifies their ethical implications. Biblical principles and examples are examined to assess whether information obtained through gossip or social media can or should be trusted. Finally, a practical model is proposed for pastoral response, distinguishing cases where rumors should be ignored from those where they may warrant further investigation. This study argues that while gossip is generally harmful and should not be relied upon, certain situations may justify its cautious use as a starting point for pastoral engagement, always guided by Scripture and love for the erring brother or sister. | en_US |
