"Speaking the Truth in Love": Philosophies for Addressing Same-Sex Attraction in WELS High Schools
Abstract
Navigating discussions around same-sex attraction in educational settings requires a balance of doctrinal fidelity, pastoral care, and cultural awareness. This thesis explores the philosophies and approaches used within Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) high schools to address same-sex attraction among students while upholding theological commitments and fostering a climate of compassion. By examining existing policies and faculty perspectives, this study seeks to identify best practices that align with scriptural teachings and promote open, respectful dialogue. The research incorporates theological analysis, educational theory, and interviews to provide a framework for WELS educators seeking to guide students in both truth and love. The findings aim to equip schools with practical strategies that reflect upholding both biblical truth and Christian love. The findings emphasize the necessity of fostering open conversations, intentional dialogue, active listening, and ongoing education while carefully considering institutional policies. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of relationship-building, avoiding stereotypes and harmful language, understanding the educational context, and faithfully proclaiming both law and gospel.
