    Abstract
Over thirty years of vicar service in Puerto Rico offered seminarians a rare opportunity to combine language acquisition, cultural immersion, and hands-on ministry. This essay documents the evolution of the program, from its experimental beginnings in 1971 to its suspension in 2004. It explores the challenges of learning Spanish in various settings—from Mexico to Puerto Rico—and the unique pastoral responsibilities vicars undertook in a mission field setting. Personal reflections reveal how the experience shaped future pastors’ resilience, adaptability, and global awareness. The essay also highlights the development of the Puerto Rican national church and the transition from missionary-led oversight to local leadership. Though the program is currently paused, its legacy continues to influence WELS mission strategy and pastoral formation. The stories and testimonies underscore the lasting spiritual and professional impact of serving in “paradise.” Abstract generated by Microsoft Copilot (GPT-4)
