    Abstract
This oral history captures the remarkable 57-year ministry of William G. Zell within the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), as recounted to his grandson-in-law, John Backus. Through vivid anecdotes and personal reflections, Zell shares his journey from childhood in Mishicot, Wisconsin, through his education, pastoral assignments, and long tenure at Northwestern Preparatory School. His roles spanned tutor, pastor, professor, coach, and president, each marked by dedication and adaptability. Zell reflects on seminary life, mission work in Tacoma, parish ministry in Kolberg and St. Paul, and his leadership during pivotal moments such as the WELS-Missouri Synod split and the restructuring of Northwestern College. Despite many titles, Zell’s favorite remained “Pastor,” emphasizing his deep love for congregational ministry. This memoir offers a rich, personal perspective on WELS history, institutional change, and the enduring value of pastoral service. —Abstract prepared by Microsoft Copilot (GPT-4)
