    Abstract
Teaching the things written in God’s Word is a key aspect of what God wants his people to do. But when did the catechism really become prevalent in aiding the church in this critical process? The early church fathers had a hand in it. Later, Luther saw a huge need. He saw a situation that was “deplorable.” Because he saw the need in the spiritual lives of the German nobility, peasantry, laity, and clergy, Luther felt he had to do something about it. Thus, we have Luther’s Large and Small Catechisms. This essay outlines the production and use of these great blessings.
