    Abstract
This historical study recounts the unique merger of Gloria Dei and Bethesda Lutheran Churches in Milwaukee, the first such union within the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). Gloria Dei began as a suburban mission congregation in 1945, while Bethesda was an established inner-city church dating back to 1891. Facing demographic shifts and declining membership, Bethesda sought relocation, ultimately merging with Gloria Dei in 1963. The paper details the courtship, merger, and adjustment phases, including legal procedures, financial arrangements, and the blending of congregational structures. The merger led to rapid growth, new facilities, and a unified ministry. Challenges such as differing traditions and leadership transitions were met with cooperation and mutual respect. The study concludes that the merger was spiritually and practically beneficial, exemplifying Christian unity and adaptability. The combined congregation, Gloria Dei–Bethesda, continues to thrive as a testimony to God’s guidance and grace. —Abstract generated by Microsoft Copilot (GPT-4)
