    Abstract
Aaron L. Christie’s essay profiles Pastor John F. Brenner, a long-serving and influential figure in the Michigan District of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). Based on a two-hour interview and extensive research in district proceedings, the paper traces Brenner’s ministry from his ordination in 1944 through his retirement in 1990. Brenner served congregations in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Michigan, most notably spending 37 years at St. John’s in Bay City. He held numerous district leadership roles, including Second Vice-President and chairman of the District Board of Education, and was deeply involved in educational policy, teacher certification, and constitutional matters. Christie highlights Brenner’s theological convictions, mission-mindedness, and pastoral dedication, as well as his reflections on synodical controversies and challenges facing future ministers. The essay concludes with Brenner’s encouragement to “work hard and enjoy the ministry,” offering a personal and historical tribute to a faithful servant of the church. —Abstract by Microsoft Copilot (GPT-4)
