Paul R. White’s God’s Tidings of Grace: A Congregational History of the 30 Years of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waupun, WI (1996) recounts the remarkable growth of a congregation that began in 1966 despite initial opposition from the WELS Mission Board. Starting with 21 worshipers in a private home, Grace Lutheran moved through temporary facilities before purchasing land and constructing its first church in 1970—a project marked by financial challenges and bold faith. The congregation soon added a parsonage (1971) and navigated internal conflicts, including a notable excommunication case. Under successive pastors—Ronald Roth, Kenneth Gawrisch, Paul Zittlow, and Timothy Mueller—Grace grew steadily, becoming self-supporting by 1973 and reaching nearly 400 members by its 25th anniversary in 1991. Major milestones include joining the Winnebago Lutheran Academy Association (1986), building a new sanctuary and fellowship hall (1991–1992), and expanding educational and ministry programs. White emphasizes God’s grace as the guiding force behind the congregation’s perseverance, unity, and mission in a community once deemed “completely churched.” Abstract prepared by Microsoft Copilot (GPT‑4).
